SSD

Today I embarked on a perilous mission to find out if an SSD hard-disk will work with my beloved old IBM Thinkpad X40 notebook.

I just ordered the hard-drive (TS8GIFD18) from offtek.co.uk at £142.12 (with shipping to Denmark) for a rather unspectacular 8GB. One of the reasons I did this was my catastrophic hard-drive failure last winter and the fact that a 60GB hard-disk (the only current option for the X40 at laptops.dk) costs a completely batwing crazy £312.29 I would also like to find out if the battered battery lasts longer and whether startup is faster.

Update: So far the hard-drive is still "Waiting stock allocation" which could mean anything from "it's gonna be sent on Monday" to "We don't really have it and you're never gonna get it".

Update 2: It turns out "Waiting stock allocation" actually did mean that it would be sent on Monday, It's being sent with Royal Mail The good folks at Offtek even supplied me with a Royal tracking number LY288323701GB I can't wait for this thing to get here!

Update 3: It's here! ZOMG Laura my wonderful roommate received it, and sent me an SMS as I was going up the stairs wondering if the postman had already been there.

I just put it in my computer and booted up Ubuntu from the external hard-drive, it's instantly recognized! 7,8 Gigs of Solid State Disk! I was gonna try a nightly build of the new Ubuntu Crazy Camel or Xylophone Xenops or whatever the hell they're calling it. But seeing at it's only at 17% at the time of writing and it's gonna be 50 more minutes before this potentially unstable version comes down over my less than leet download speed I'm just gonna try the regular old 7.04 that I have right here. Stay tuned for more.

Update 4: So it turns out the Ubuntu cd that I had had died at some point in Spain, which makes me all the more happy that I already moved all the pictures from the trip to my girlfriends computer.

This means that I'm currently downloading Tribe 5 of the Ubuntu developer version 69% and counting. The download speed is way down about 100K/sec so it'll take another half hour before I can even begin to burn it.

I'm really looking forward to trying out this harddisk, for the first time in almost a year, I can use this computer completely untethered.
